Salt – an eye-catching building with character on the IJ
From industrial port to innovative urban district.
Amsterdam’s Houthavens district has a rich history. It once served as a transhipment location for timber from Northern Europe and had a robust, industrial character. In recent years, however, the area has undergone an impressive transformation, evolving from a rugged port area into a vibrant urban district offering a blend of living, working, and leisure spaces. Against this backdrop, the Salt & Pepper Blend project is taking shape: three striking buildings that together form a harmonious contrast.
Salt is bright, transparent and inviting.
Where Pepper is characterised by dark tones and a solid appearance, Salt is its light-hearted counterpart. The building stands out for its light façade, rhythmic lines and transparent appearance. Designed by MVRDV, the architecture of Salt subtly references the location’s industrial past with a contemporary twist. Large glass surfaces, white frames and clean lines give the building a modern, welcoming character.
Sorba’s contribution: customised ceramic.
Sorba was responsible for the complete engineering, production and installation of the Salt building’s façade cladding. The façade is clad with ceramic panels in three different shades of white and grey, which perfectly complement the building’s name and appearance. The combination of flat and profiled elements creates a subtle depth effect that changes with the light and time of day.
In addition to aesthetics, functionality was also essential. The ceramic façade elements are durable, low-maintenance and resistant to the humid air of the IJ. By working closely with the architect and contractor from the design phase onwards, Sorba was able to contribute ideas for smart detailing and technical solutions.
Precision in execution
Every element of Salt’s façade is custom-made. Thanks to the aluminium substructure, the ceramic panels are precisely aligned with the underlying window and façade structure. This requires precise engineering and on-site installation. Thanks to our experience with complex façade constructions and prefabrication, Sorba achieved this level of precision without compromising on speed or quality.
A sustainable future by the water
Salt symbolises not only innovation in the Houthavens, but also Sorba’s role in constructing sustainable, innovative façades. By selecting recyclable materials, carefully considered detailing and high-quality finishes, Sorba is making a significant contribution to ensuring the building’s long-term viability.
