Renovation of the Piet Hein Tunnel: future-proof infrastructure under the IJ

The renovated Piet Hein Tunnel in Amsterdam is ready for the future. This important traffic artery under the IJ connects the city centre with Amsterdam East and the A10 motorway and handles thousands of cars, cyclists and tram passengers every day. After more than twenty years of intensive use, a large-scale modernisation was necessary to bring the tunnel back up to today’s standards in terms of technology, construction and aesthetics.

The renovation was carried out on behalf of the municipality of Amsterdam by the Yunex Traffic / Heijmans consortium. Yunex is responsible for the tunnel’s technical installations, while Heijmans is responsible for the civil engineering part. The renovation focused on safety, sustainability and extending the tunnel’s lifespan. Architectural firm UN studio was responsible for the architectural design and spatial quality. Installations were renewed, installation spaces optimised and structural components addressed. As a result, the tunnel now complies with current legislation and regulations and is prepared for the coming decades.

Aluminium formwork cladding: customisation in a complex environment

An essential part of the renovation is the refurbishment of the formwork structures in the tunnel. Sorba supplied and installed the aluminium cladding for the entire formwork cladding.

In total, there are 30 formwork zones (north and south sides) that have been fitted with high-quality aluminium cladding.

Technical precision under time pressure

Working in an existing tunnel requires extreme accuracy. The available space is limited, tolerances are minimal and work is carried out within tight schedules and safety protocols.

Sorba fully customised, engineered, produced and installed the aluminium cladding. The following factors were taken into account:

  • The existing concrete structure
  • Installation routes and technical facilities
  • Fire safety and maintenance accessibility
  • Durability and corrosion resistance

The choice of aluminium provides a lightweight but strong solution with a long service life. The material is low-maintenance and resistant to the specific conditions in a tunnel environment, such as moisture, pollution and temperature fluctuations.

Clean look, functional added value

In addition to its technical function, the new stamp coating also contributes to a calmer and more uniform tunnel appearance. Consistent detailing and high-quality finishing create a clean, modern look.

With the renovation of the Piet Hein Tunnel, Amsterdam is investing in reliable and future-proof infrastructure. For Sorba, this project confirms its expertise in complex renovations within existing structures.
