Sleek platform canopies with a smart construction method

Nijmegen Goffert Station is situated on the outskirts of Nijmegen; it is a compact station that plays a vital role in the region. The platform canopies have given the station a contemporary look, with the construction and finish closely coordinated.

Distinctive design

The platform canopies immediately catch the eye with their sleek, angular shape. These are not standard canopies, but distinct volumes that give the station its own unique character. The steel base creates a robust appearance, whilst the finish adds a touch of refinement.

On the inside, subtle accents have been chosen to soften the overall look and blend in with the green surroundings. This creates a balance between technology and experience.

Building alongside the track

The construction of the canopies required a practical approach. As the track remained in use, a large part of the structure was assembled in advance alongside the track, including part of the finishing work.

During a brief closure, the canopies were then hoisted into place in one go. This minimised disruption and ensured that the work on site could be completed quickly. The structure connects to the lift shafts, which also serve a load-bearing function.

Finish as a defining factor

What makes this project stand out is the attention to the finish. The canopies are clad on both the top and bottom, giving them a calm and consistent appearance from every angle.

The chosen aluminium composite cladding (ACM) is light, sleek and durable. With designs of this kind, the quality lies in the details: seams, joints and transitions must be precise to allow the design to come into its own.

Sorba’s role

In this project, Sorba is responsible for the cladding of the platform canopies, from engineering through to installation.

The work involves:

  • Developing the cladding system and details
  • Supplying and installing the aluminium (ACM) cladding
  • The associated supporting structure
  • Finishing the canopies, both internally and externally

By contributing ideas early in the process, the design and execution are well aligned. This coordination is essential, particularly with a prefabricated approach and a complex steel structure.

Planning also plays a major role during execution. Installation must take place within a limited timeframe and in an environment where safety is paramount. This requires meticulous preparation and efficient execution.

The perfect finish

The platform canopies at Nijmegen Goffert Station demonstrate that even a relatively small project can offer a great deal, both technically and aesthetically. By building intelligently and paying close attention to the finish, a sustainable and distinctive whole is created.

With its integrated approach, Sorba makes a significant contribution to the quality of this project.
