A new step in the development of Rotterdam South

On Laan op Zuid, the Bernini Tower will add a new landmark to Rotterdam’s skyline. The residential tower forms part of the wider development of Rotterdam South, where former port areas are gradually being transformed into vibrant residential neighbourhoods. The Bernini Tower marks this transition and gives the area a distinct urban character.

Sleek design with a warm appearance

The design by MIX Architects is characterised by a strong vertical structure and refined detailing. This gives the tower a sleek and serene appearance, whilst the warm bronze colour of the façade lends it a rich character.

Commissioned by NBU, a residential building has been realised here that blends well with its surroundings, yet retains its own character within the streetscape of Laan op Zuid.

Facade construction by Sorba

Sorba was responsible for the entire facade cladding of the project, covering a total area of approximately 8,300 m². The facade comprises a combination of edge cladding, louvers, facade panels and ceiling cladding. It is precisely this variety that creates depth in the facade’s appearance and reinforces the vertical lines of the design.

The aluminium components are anodised in a warm bronze colour and combined with glass parapets. Depending on the light, the appearance of the façade changes throughout the day, giving the building a lively character.

Sustainability and biodiversity integrated

The design also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. For instance, approximately 600 m² of PV panels have been installed, which generate part of the building’s energy. In addition, nesting boxes have been integrated into the façade, contributing to biodiversity in the city.

From design to completion

Sorba oversaw the project from start to finish. By treating the project as a single entity, with detailed drawings and a clear construction schedule, the build was able to proceed in a controlled and efficient manner.

A building that enhances its surroundings

The Bernini Tower demonstrates how architecture, engineering and sustainability come together in a building that not only fulfils its function but also adds something to the city. For Sorba, this is yet another project in which feasibility and aesthetic appeal go hand in hand.
